2nd to 5th NOVEMBER 2016
Review by Jacqui Hartley – NODA Rep.
The Wiz, a book by William F. Brown is based on the story of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, by L. Frank Baum, with modern upbeat music, jazz elements and Lyrics by Charlie Smalls.
Every character was outstanding in this production Dorothy, (Hannah Lawton) performed with ease and perfection. I was really impressed with the three characters Scarecrow, (Jed Kuterescz) with flexible wobbly legs, Tim Man. (Frank Bradshaw) and Lion (Sam Bell) who all had a wealth of acting ability and delivered their songs with panache. An assured natural performance from The Wiz, (Bertie Yates) a cross between Elvis in the first act and Frank Spencer in the second, he delivered his big number near the end of the show with confidence beyond his years.
The three Witches contrasted really well together,Evillene, (Ruby O’Hare) Addaperie, (Zweyla Mitchell) Glinda, (Amber Marsden) all gave fine performances. Nice little character role from The Gate Keeper (Joe Smith).
This production provided opportunities for all, there were Munchkins, Crows, Winkies, Wizettes, Poppies and even yellow Brick Roads with sign posts.
These extremely talented youngster ranging from 8 to 18 successfully transported their audience over the rainbow.
The choreography bounced around the stage from start to finish, with splendid strikingly colourful costumes, created by the societies’ very clever design team.
The eye chatching brightly coloured scenes were projected on to a screen surrounding the stage allowing it to flow along without any holds ups.
My sincere congratulations to all involved.
