Review by Jacqui Hartley – NODA Rep.

The Wiz, a book by William F. Brown is based on the story of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, by L. Frank Baum, with modern upbeat music, jazz elements and Lyrics by  Charlie Smalls.
Every character was outstanding in this production Dorothy, (Hannah Lawton) performed with ease and perfection.  I was really impressed with the three characters Scarecrow, (Jed Kuterescz) with flexible wobbly legs, Tim Man. (Frank Bradshaw) and Lion (Sam Bell) who all had a wealth of acting ability and delivered their songs with panache.  An assured natural performance from The Wiz, (Bertie Yates) a cross between Elvis in the first act and Frank Spencer in the second, he delivered his big number near the end of the show with confidence beyond his years.
The three Witches contrasted really well together,Evillene, (Ruby O’Hare) Addaperie, (Zweyla Mitchell) Glinda, (Amber Marsden) all gave fine performances. Nice little character role from The Gate Keeper (Joe Smith).
This production provided opportunities for all, there were Munchkins, Crows, Winkies, Wizettes, Poppies and even yellow Brick Roads with sign posts.
These extremely talented youngster ranging from 8 to 18 successfully transported their audience over the rainbow.
The choreography bounced around the stage from start to finish, with splendid strikingly colourful costumes, created by the  societies’ very clever design team.
The eye chatching brightly coloured scenes were projected on to a screen surrounding the stage allowing it to flow along without any holds ups.
My sincere congratulations to all involved.

Review by Jo Sykes, Youth Advisor at NODA.
From the moment we entered the Playhouse we knew we were in for a treat.  The large poster in the lobby showing the high quality costumes was amazing and the programme is spectacular (I can’t wait to show it to my own society).  Please pass my congratulations to David as it was a wonderful representation of what the audience could expect from this production.
We thought all elements of the  were great; the costumes, band, singing, dancing, clever digital scenery, portable props, make-up, sound, lighting and most of all the performances of the young people.  Without exception they were really super.  The strong voices and clear projection enhanced their portrayal of the characters and everyone (from the youngest to the oldest) moved around the stage with such confidence.  As youth adviser an important element of the performance for me is the interaction of the young people with each other and this was great – there was clearly a great deal of empathy between the performers and most importantly they were all having a great time entertaining us.  I can imagine they have a great time at rehearsals too.
Of course all of this doesn’t come without the hard work of what must be a really committed group of adult volunteers.  Please convey to the Production Team and Committee my thanks for all the work they do for young people in the Calder Valley.  (I really wish we lived closer so my 13 year old could join!)
Please pass on my congratulations to all the young people involved – I do hope those approaching adulthood will continue in adult societies as there is definitely a lot of talent which it would be a shame to waste.

Yet again, our wonderfully talented cast of children aged from 8-18 pulled off another stunning week of shows to prove just what they can do. Our cast work so hard to bring our audiences the very best in musical theatre.

After 9 months of planning and 6 months of rehearsing, we have all had an amazing week.  The work put in by the cast and our significant crew proves what can be achieved by working together as a team.

Our team of volunteers work all year round to support our cast and give them all an experience which we hope they will never forget!!!

Our next show will be our BIG SPRING CONCERT in April. Watch this space for more information and how you can get involved.
